John Elway and Sammy Winder connected on a 20 yard Touchdown pass and catch with 4:01 left in the fourth quarter to give the Broncos a 38-31 lead over the Cleveland Browns in the 1987 AFC Championship Game in Denver. The final was 38-33 following an intentional safety as the Broncos tried running out the clock to head to Super Bowl XXII as the AFC Champions.
Elway finished the day 14/26 for 281 yards with 3 touchdown passes and an interception. Winder led the team in rushing with 72 yards on 20 carries to go with his 34 yards receiving and the game winning touchdown. Mark Jackson led the team in receiving with 134 yards on 4 catches and a score form 80 yards out. Fellow “amigo” Ricky Nattiel had 95 yards on 5 catches and a touchdown catch of 8 yards to to open the scoring in the first quarter. Steve Sewell (1-1) and Gene Lang (5-51) , each provided first half rushing touchdowns. Rich Karlis added a 38 yard field goal and 5 extra points.
Defensively, Freddie Gilbert had an interception, Simon Fletcher and Rulon Jones each sacked Bernie Kosar on the day. Tony Lilly led the team with 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Andre Townsend, Randy Robbins and Jeremiah Castille recovered fumbles.
