The Broncos jumped out to a 24-14 halftime lead and held on to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game to earn a trip to Super Bowl XXXII.
Terrell Davis opened the scoring with an 8 yard run in the first quarter. Davis finished the day with 136 yards on 26 carries. John Elway went 18/31 for 210 yards and pair of touchdowns and an interception. He connected with Ed McCaffrey (5-37) and Howard Griffin (2-26) on the TD passes. Rod Smith led the team in receiving with 87 yards on 6 catches. Jason Elam added a 43 yard field goal and three extra points.
Defensively, the Broncos stymied former Colorado Buffalo Quarterback Kordell Stewart forcing the quarterback into four turnovers. Allen Aldridge, Ray Crockett and Tyrone Braxton each picked off Stewart. Corckett and Braxton each tallied 8 total tackles, and Crockett added a sack to his stat page, as did Neil Smith and Keith Traylor with Smith’s forcing the Stewart lost fumble.
