The phrase of the day is Peter.
While there are likely a few Peter’s that have played in the NFL, the term comes from the punt return team.
When the punting team shanks a kick and it’s short/off-target, the receiving teams yells “Peter, Peter Peter”. Translation. “Do not touch the ball” or “Be Alert”. Some teams/schools/etc might use other terms, but that was the phrase I’ve seen most use.
When a punt is shanked, if it bounces up and hits the receiving team, it becomes a live ball, so the Peter call alerts everyone to be aware, find the ball and do not touch it.
One could argue that the definition comes from a euphemism/slang term for the male penis. (Editor note: 😆😆😆)
