Man, you can’t walk into the Broncos locker room without tripping over a running back these days. Sure, they’re down one with the loss of Devontae Booker, but one of the newest additions to the backfield is none other than former Chefs running back Jamaal Charles.
Charles himself is coming off injuries and surgeries on both of his knees, but is poised and ready to make a full comeback this season, and according to him, “I feel great. Going out there and practicing and doing the mini drills and individuals. Going through my plays I feel good. I’m excited just to be out here.”
The Broncos staff is going to be cautious with Charles, easing him in slowly, so not sure how much he will be on the field in preseason action. “Right now, I’m just following whatever they tell me to do and I can only control what I can control,” said Charles on whether or not he’ll get the rock for some games before the regular season.
The self-described “big brother” of the RB staff, Charles belongs to a cast that includes CJ Anderson, Juwan Thompson, recently injured Booker, Bernard Pierce, rookie De’Angelo Henderson, and newly acquired journeyman Stevan Ridley. Quite the loaded deck or rushers, but who will make the final roster?
The Broncos have smartly made sure to shore up the depth to make the injury scare less severe. Booker was poised to have an excellent second year under a new offense that aligned with his skills from Utah. Charles is a question mark on whether his knees will hold up for another season. CJ has been often questioned for his durability, as he has yet to finish a whole 16 game season. Ridley has bounced around the league, and has ball security issues. Juwan looks slimmer and buffer than previous seasons, so that’s a good sign. And is Pierce, another journeyman, more than just a camp body? So many questions that will be answered in a very short amount of time.
