ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Demaryius Thomas told the press today he doesn’t care who the QB is, this guy came off playing with Peyton Manning for most of his career and capped it with a Super Bowl win. DT cares about winning games. This is the first training camp in a long while where DT is excited for it to start…except for the conditioning test. Between you and me, you know DT is rooting for the guy who throws bombs downfield…hmm wonder who that is?
On the quarterback competition, “For the most part, I’m excited about training camp to see who is going to be our starting quarterback. I still think that that’s coaches’ decision to make and pick the guy to see who it’s going to be. It’s going to take some time, but I think the main thing is that it’s going to help the situation out is that everyone who is going to be around the guys just gets better and let’s that play out. I’m excited about it and I look forward to it.”
This is code for please pick a starting QB by pre-season game one. On what he wishes to see from Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian
“What anybody else wants to see, throw some completions and progression. Make it hard for coach to pick the starter. You go into week one and either one of them could be the starter, you just have to make the decision. Make it hard for each other and come out and compete.”
On his expectations for training camp, “I think it’ll be more. It won’t be too bad because we got to put everything in. The main thing now is just game planning, which comes down the road. With training camp, it goes so fast. It’s mainly everybody has to figure it out on their own. I can’t show much but what’s on the field. When you don’t know the playbook, it’s going to be tough as well. If everybody knows the playbook, it should be fine.”
Don’t fix what’s not broken. On whether this offseason was different than previous years, “Not really. I’m probably a little lighter than what I usually am and that’s about it. I trained. I started training earlier.”
When he said he worked out with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Minnesota Timberwolves G Jimmy Butler, I thought this was strange. Why not workout with our QB’s? “It was good. It was actually Jimmy tagging along because he wanted to play football so bad. It was me, Jimmy and Dak. It was a good little workout. We were in LA together, so we just said we’d get together and workout together and that’s what we did.”
No one will ever replace 18. On catching with Prescott. “It was cool. It was different but it was good.”
On Butler playing football, “Jimmy? At football? Jimmy isn’t good at football. He’ll be out in the red zone. I told him that a couple times, but he’s more of a basketball player.”
USA Today had Broncos ranked 24th entering this upcoming season. Please underestimate us. Elway said in his presser he likes when the team isn’t taken seriously as a contender. I agree. Grow that chip, count us out. Same thing happened during our SB50 year. DT says he has been motivated since not making the playoffs this year, second time only in his career.
“They’re super motivated. First off, there are guys who are excited to learn a new system and a different system that we didn’t have last year. Everybody is already doubting us, so there’s excited about that as well. So, we’re bringing the fire and just trying to be the best we can.”
“My motivation stems from last year when we didn’t make the playoffs. We don’t listen to what people say. Everybody is going to say what they want to say. It’s about us getting better than we were last year. That’s my second time not making the playoffs since I’ve been a Bronco and this is my eighth year. We want to get back to where we were and show what we can do.”
On what strides he’s seen from Lynch
“I saw big ones. Totally different guy than last year. He was more comfortable. Reading all of his reads, making the throws. That’s why I said I’m excited about it because Trevor got it, Paxton got it, so we’re going to see who comes out on top.”
On whether not having a leader in your quarterback changes your team, “I don’t think so. We’re going to be fine whether the quarterback is not a leader or if he is one. We’re going to be fine as a team.”
The only game I care about this year. #HitBrady #BeatthePatriots On the talent gap between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos, “I don’t think there’s a big gap at all. It’s about just going out and putting up and playing as a group, together. A lot of factors come with that, but I don’t think it’s a big gap at all.”
On his feelings about the talent in the wide receiver competition
“We have a lot of talent. It’s going to be tough for the coaches, for [Wide Receivers Coach] Tyke [Tolbert], [Head Coach] Vance [Joseph] and everybody. I’ve been training with [WR] Bennie [Fowler]. He’s a totally different player than he was last year. I think that some of those injuries that bothered him last year, he done got rid of them and he’s a totally different player. I’m excited for him and [WR] Cody [Latimer]. Then, you got the younger guys as well. It’s going to be a fun training camp.”
This is true in life. Don’t be late and show up early. Great advice from the veteran WR.
“Don’t be late. That’s it to tell you the truth. If you’re not late, you’ll be fine.”
DT is my fave Bronco. I might be biased because he gave me both his gloves he used after the Titans/Broncos game last year. 🙂 On being the longest tenured Bronco
“Yes. I have. I looked at some history, too. It is (a surprise). Behind me, you have [OLB] Von [Miller] and [CB] Chris [Harris Jr.]. It’s so surprising.”
It will be great to see DT as Captain again. I am looking forward to watching DT catching many touchdowns this season!
