ENGLEWOOD, Colorado. The Broncos’ Rookies had orientation and their first practice today, afterward, newly signed Jake Butt took questions from the media.
Butt couldn’t stress enough how incredibly lucky he feels to have signed with the Broncos: “It’s been a dream come true. I just couldn’t wait to get out here and get to work. I remember being on the phone and I was like, ‘Can I fly here tomorrow?’ After the phone call, they said there are rules against that. I had to wait a little bit. To be here, especially in such a great organization with proven winners, amazing fans and great teammates, it’s been wonderful.”
After tearing his ACL, he’s sidelined until August or so. All he can do are walk-through type of practices, but he does want to help where he can.
“The timetable is still to be determined. I’m just still working right now. Whenever they clear me, I know I’m going to be ready.”
Butt believes he will be a versatile Tight End for the Broncos and offer multiple strengths to the team in his play ability:
“I think I’m versatile. It is kind of fading away this in this game. You see more spread tight ends. For me, I believe I can line up anywhere. I can be a Y-tight end, line up in the backfield, flex me on the slot or by myself. With that, you have to have a very good understanding of the offense, too, for the coaches to trust you to line up anywhere.”
